I need to buy some blank DVD's and I have def found the cheapest I am going to get from play.com.

They are selling Maxell DVD-R 16X Speed / 4.7GB and Maxell DVD+R 16X speed / 4.7GB at £12.99 for a spindle of 50 and its 3 for the price of 2, workiing out at £8.99 for 50

Should I buy the DVD-R or DVD+R (I do not know the difference)

And is Maxell an OK make??

All help greatly appreciated

Hi Paul,

You can check out the following Wikipedia page for some interesting facts about DVD writable technology:

To give a summary, -R was the first to appear on the market, by five years, so expect most compatibility with this type. However, +R is better for higher speed burning and has better error handling.

I have also been told that -R is better for use with video whereas +R is better suited for data. I can't say that I have had a problem with my disks though.

Maxell is not a bad manufacturer although not a great one. I have had problems with their VHS tapes in the past and so would tend to be weary. DVD lifespan is a very critical issue and choosing the correct disks is therefore important. Most people, who don't want to invest in the professional gold DVD disks, go with Verbatim. They are certainly not cheap, but if you need your DVDs to live longer than a couple of years then they are worth it. BTW: Store your DVDs in the dark and as cool as possible (not in the fridge though). The dyes that store the data are light sensitive and need to be to allow the data to be written. Keeping them in the dark will prevent your 1s becoming 0s and all sorts of other ugliness.

Hope this helps...

Eric.

Maxell is ok, but just ok. The best is Taiyo-Yuden. Others may say Ritek/Ridata, but I think they are a close second, everything else is way off in the distance. If you know your DVD burner supports both +/- then get the -R

+R is a consumer level, but doesn't always work on all home DVD players. A good (stateside) link is below, sorry have no links for UK, but try a search for Taiyo-Yuden as a DVD-R manufacturer.

you really need to check your machine - because some are -dvds and some are +dvds - they are different formats. Contact your manufacturer, You must get it right or it will be a waste of money. Maxwell is a good make - they have been around for years and made the first audio tapes in the 1980s

Hi xyz, Use Nero, it is easy. Here is the steps. 1. Insert the DVD you want to copy into your DVD writer. 2. Close any program that wants to play the movie. (or read the pictures) 3. Start Nero. 4. Click on the "Copy DVD" option. 5. See that the "Source Drive" and "Destination Drive" are the same. 6. Click on "Copy". 7. Nero will now create an image on our hard drive. When it is done, it will ask you for the blank DVD disc. 8. Insert your blank DVD disc and wait for Nero to copy your DVD. Have fun.
