i bought a wd mybook essential to use as a back up system about a week ago. when i hooked it up, and looked up the details on the wd site, i realised i'd bought one of the ones that come without software! i'm still unsure what to do about that, but that's not my main problem at the moment. i couldn't work out how to setup a back up system (what and when) so i turned off the computer. the next day i couldn't get the computer to start up properly. i put the windows install disk in and was able to back up my files, but not reinstall (restore) windows (it would take me through the install but it wouldn't actually let me log in). then i tried unplugging the mybook and it worked! it seems the comp was trying to boot from the mybook??? can someone explain this to me so i can understand it better, and if anyone has experience regarding this particular product, what should i do now with the external hard drive?? any help is appreciated

Like you said the computer was trying to boot from your hard drive. This is not really unusual and it can be fixed easily. Here is what you do.

When you first turn on your computer (with the hdd unplugged) there will be an option to enter the windows BIOS.. usually this is done with the "delete" key but it might be different in your computer. In the BIOS there will be something called "Boot Options" or something similar. There you can change the order of the booting sequence and if "usb" or something similar at the top that needs to be changed to something else like the C: drive or your cd drive. I hope what I said makes sense and if not feel free to email me at:

Ur system is trying to boot from ur my book and u need to change the options in the BIOS.To do this--

Press the setupkey(it will show wen the system starts) and it will enter into the BIOS settings and here go to boot-booting order-change the order to boot from ur hard drive) and save it.

properly... if there is something incorrect with in simple terms the potential grant of the exterior unit, you would be in solid shape; you are able to in simple terms crack open the case and connect the not hassle-free force to a working laptop or pc and with a bit of luck have it artwork positive. yet... if there is something incorrect with the not hassle-free force itself, your terrific to not play around with it. The greater you potential it on, the greater serious your situation ought to get. one thank you to locate if that is a not hassle-free force subject, is sound, in case you place your ear as much because it, do you pay attention it spinning? do you pay attention clicking sounds? in case you pay attention something exterior of the 'norm', then turn it off and save it off... If the HDD is having mechanical subject concerns, no utility accessible will help. GeekSquad sucks IMO... If the help on that force is actual powerful, i could have it despatched out. i've got despatched a pair of drives to Ontrack information restoration and function had great success with them. additionally had a fifteen force RAID circulate ineffective on me and had that despatched to Vantage technologies, Inc. and that they recovered each and everything. the two Ontrack and Vantage will evaluate the HDD and inform you what would be waiting to be recovered, for loose or a minimum value. After which you're able to have them do the restoration and function the force shipped returned to you. while my own force died, I messed around with it for a splash, yet interior the top I deliver it to Onrrack. It wasn't low priced, however the help on that force became useful. I choose you success on your information restoration journey (if that seems to be the case). Are you interior of reach to NH?
