my disk drive is broken so cd's arn't an option, plus that would take forever. my computer has less than a gb of memory and runs out all the time. i've put my photos on an external harddrive and then deleted them off the computer, but i'm worried because i've been told that all external harddrives eventually fail and eat your data. what else can i do to get my stuff off my computer, still accessible if i need it, and out of danger of being deleted?

external harddrives fail eventually?

Dear Friend... Also eventually you can recovery data from external HDDs. On external HDD data are safe againts Virus, Computer Fails, Windows System File corruption.

When you Dedicate a HDD for just backups, it is only %1 of the chance that it can fail. When a HDD fails it is logged at the Event Viewer if the External HDD is connected to the computer full time. So checking this you will be able to detect on time possible fails. If you only connect the HDD at the Backup Precedure, the HDD never will fail!

Of course you have options:

Backup to DVDs, BR or CDs.

Also consider Online Backups. (there is free 2 GB online Backup)

I have clients backing up weekly and the HDDs are connected full time and never had a problem 5 years already. Remember, is the HDD fails under warranty, the store where you did buy this device, they have to recover your data at free cost for you. So, buy external HDD and buy extender warranty for 5 years, if this HDD fail, they will be able to recover it (%99), if never fails and the 5 years expire buy another HDD transfer the data and keep backing up.

If you Buy a solid-state drive (SSD), dimiss all what you read on this answer, this king of HDD (harddrive) are the best and use to be persistent data storage device!

In computers, alllll waysss, buy and Pray!

Good Luck!

There are a number of options, I'll list a few:

1. Buy a new disk drive, preferably a DVD-burner.

Pros:

- You have complete control on who has access to the files you need to backup.

- You can easily access the files you need (provided you label and store them appropriately)

Cons:

- Burning can take time

- Needs organization

- Takes up storage space (if that is an issue)

- No protection from natural disasters (tsunamis, earthquakes etc.)

2. Look at online backup solutions

Pros:

- No hassle with burning and storing discs.

- Easy access anytime, provided you have internet access.

- Protects from natural disasters

Cons:

- (Usually) a monthly fee

- You can never be sure that your private files are just that, private.

I've never personally used online backup solutions since I trust myself to backup my most important files on an external drive which I only switch on when needed (thus lengthening the lifespan of it).

The online backup services are quite inexpensive (ranging from $5 up), although some are easier-to-use than others. PCMag.com has a nice article in regards of backup services, Isuggest you take a look at them if you decide to go that route.

external harddrive fail cause people drop them, plug them in to a 1.0 usb port instead of a 2.0 or higher

port, pull the usb plug out from the usb port without safety remove it, click eject cause it to act like

a cd/dvd,that is when please insert disk in e: {any letter used},and any other unspeakable things to the external drive, it's still the best way to save data externally or you could buy online storage space{ me personnally i don't trust it online storage space}my western digital drive passport been going strong for about 4 years
