A portable sturdy device you plug into a USB port (about 2-3 inches in length) thats holds information.
Usually Windows will recognize the device as a seperate drive, accessed through MyComputer and you can copy files to it like you would any other folders.
They usually come in space sizes of 256 MB, 512 MB or 1 GB nowadays, but even the 256 MB holds over 50 times the space of a 3.25" floppy disk.
Well worth it if you have more than a few documents and pictures you're afriad to lose and need a cheap backup or if you're trying to move document/music files from one computer to another.

a flash drive is a portable hard drive generally of a small capacity when compared to a hard drive that can be connected to a computer using a USB port and can be used for data transfer from 1 machine to another. It is basically used for data transport and NOT for data storage since, unlike CDs, it can be over written. It is like a floppy which much higher transfer speed and much greater capacity.
Flash Drives generally come in the following capacities :
128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB, 10 GB.
A flash drive of >10 GB capacity is a portable hard drive which acts as good as ur PC hard drive.
You can get a good enough 1GB pen drive for $15 !!

Here's an explanation:
http://www.usbflashdrive.org/usbfd_overview.html
"Despite the different brands and names you've heard for USB flash drives – JumpDrivesâ¢, Pocket drivesâ¢, Pen drivesâ¢, and Thumb drives⢠– they all pretty much operate the same way. The difference is mostly in price, capacity, design, functions and features (for example, some have built-in MP3 players). What's really important, though, is what they share: They're all pluggable, portable, and powerful!"
