My DVD Burner (HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GWA-4166B) suddenly stopped burning DVDs.
It will do everything else fine, but if I put in a blank DVD, it is recognized as a blank CD. If I try to burn a DVD with any program, it says it is burning but does nothing, no matter how long I wait.
I have looked for hours and found no real solution. I have tried uninstalling the drive and updating the firmware.
The DVD-R Discs I have worked fine a few months ago.

R discs will only burn once. RW discs allow for mistakes by allowing more than one try at burning.

It could be a virus. You could call the 800 computer manufacturer's number and tell them that you want to buy a system restore disc. It will restore your computer to factory specs by wiping it clean. I got one from HP for about $16. It is good to have one on hand in any case .

Or it could be you need to replace the DVD burner for some reason if it is very old. If it is under warranty, then try going that route.

You may want to try getting some canned air, and cleaning out the inside of the DVD drive to try to clear out any dust or debris that might be in the area of the laser. Typically cleaning discs aren't recommended by manufacturers as these discs were originally created for regular CD drives, and the internals of the drive vary.

try to put your computer to the point that the burner worked, maybe the communication between your pc and dvd burner is just broken.

if you don't like doing that , you can also just repair your files:
