I just got a NEWLink USB 2.0 to Serial D9 Quad Cable Adaptor to link my Dell laptop running XP to some instruments in my lab. When I hook them up I loose control of the mouse and the on-screen cursor starts jumping around. I've tried a couple of USB-Serial cables and have the same problem. Is there a way round this?
Many thanks

Go to device manager - mouse. Right click on this mouse-not-a-mouse device and select Update device driver.

Select the correct driver from either cd or local drive (or run setup from the cd that came with the lead). Or select any old driver just to see if that's the problem.

XP will sort out any IRQ conflicts if the adapter is Plug and Prey (they normally are for USB) and won't let you modify them. You could try changing the COM port (if it lets you), but the USB line is controlled exclusively by XP and if there was a conflict, no USB devices would work.

I would change the serial port setting in the USB-serial adaptor driver settings it looks as though you have a conflict

If you go to the device manager in system properties and rt click on the USB-serial device shown you should be able to change the COM port to a different value, hopefully that should fix it
