I recently bought a 2Gb 1333mhz ram module and have 2 of the same modules installed in my Msi h55 p31 mobo (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as… my mobo has Four DIMM sockets and have installed the 2 ram modules in the first and third socket. so i was wondering if the third module needs to be installed in a certain socket or can be placed anywhere?

Ideally, modern RAM likes to be installed in pairs. However, it's not absolutely necessary, and the position isn't relevant. Personally, I'd place it in slot 2, but it will operate equally well in slot 4.

Only one way to find out, give it a shot in slot 2, if it doesn't work move it to slot 4. Just a matter of trial and error as doing so shouldn't harm a thing.

Since you have 3 sticks forget about dual channeling so any way you install them makes no difference.
