Its really not a matter of how much...but of how much the PC will use. a 32bit OS won't recognize more than 3.25GB of ram even if you had 16GB installed. the 64bit OS will recognize the full 4GB. either way they will still both work. there is no real difference between 2 x 2GB or 1 x 4GB except for the "dual channel" effect. the 32bit OS will only recognize 3.25GB either way.

4GB of memory is fine with a 64 bit operating system, with a 32 bit OS you wouldn't be able to use all of it. You are better with a pair of 2GB memory modules instead of one 4GB mem module because this will allow it to use the memory in the faster dual channel mode.

The older games that it can't run are probably written in 16 bit code, which the 64 bit versions of Windows don't support. You can always try installing Virtualbox, creating a virtual machine with it and installing Windows XP (32 bit) on that VM. Virtualbox supports 3D acceleration, XP Mode doesn't (Microsoft Virtual PC).

You say you want to install Windows XP (32) because your games don't run on the 64 bit OS that you have installed.

In which case - it is not clear what your concern is about memory.

4Gb is max for 32bit. anything above about 3 1/2Gb won't be recognised. Use 2x2Gb as it is more efficient.

I don't understand what exactly you are asking. I've read your question three times and I still can't figure out what your question is.
