I am a real computer dunce, but since I am traveling I must have a laptop (I write, Skype, etc.). As advised I downloaded free AVG, but I'm confused about updates (download vs how much memory should I be using), and I also see 'virus removal tools', goes on and on, and don't know which of ALL OF THIS I should be downloading. (NOTE: for whatever reason I seem to get virus or other weird problems pretty easily. I don't do anything weird - go on a lot of weird sites or anything - and am terrified of virus's/trojans (found folders once with all the valuable contents MISSING). Maybe it has to do with traveling? Going from country to country and hacker places (?) like Serbia and Egypt. Thanks for any advice about what's important to download. Otherwise my fears and my instincts tell me to download EVERYTHING!

avg is good if kept updated. (turn on auto update)

windows firewall is ok

use spybot search and destroy to get rid of malware.

Stop downloading stuff that hurts your pc. never run scripts in your browser without being sure you are on a legitimate website. Stop looking at porn you'll go blind! Don't open attachments in emails unless you are sure of their origin (who sent them). Turn off the preview pane in outlook. Most offers of free icons/emoticons contain malware. The software writers for virus and malware stuff are crafty buggers.

If all this is too much for you go out and spend 30 - 50 quid for a internet security product. I would recomend you upgrade your AVG to their internet protect product - it does everything.

DO NOT use Norton.

Uninstall the AVG, it used to be good, but no longer.

Load Commode free Firewall, and MS Security Essential. That is a good basis.

You can the add SpywareBlaster as a back-up. All Free.

AVG's Link Scanner checks web sites for you when you search, gives a Yes/No for sites.
