I've followed the instructions to repair Windows XP like booting from CD, run setup, repair the installed Windows, etc.

The problem now begins with installing Windows, the part where there is the "Collecting Information", "Dynamic Update", blah blah blah, and "Installing Windows". Usually it would say that I have to wait for approximately 39 mins. and the status would be "Installing Devices...". When it gets to "Copying files.....", a window pops up and says "Some files are needed, please insert the disk labeled Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 into your disk drive. Click OK to browse from your folder". I got confused coz the CD was already in the disk drive, so I just clicked OK and clicked Browse to search for that specific file in the disk drive. When I clicked on the disk drive, an error popped up saying something like "could not be recognized".

The folder being specified by the computer to where the files should be copied was "E:\I386" (E is the location of the disk drive). So what I tried to do was to copy that folder to the hard drive so that setup can copy the files from there. I went back from start and tried to repair it again. When it gets to the "Copying files....", I clicked OK and clicked Browse again and located the folder from the hard drive. Then, when I clicked Open and clicked OK, an error pops up and says "Setup cannot copy the file 'blah blah blah.dll". Not just ONE file but ALL the files cannot be copied. Now my computer constantly keeps on restarting by itself.

PS: The Power Supply is NOT the problem. I suspect it's either the HDD or Windows. HELP ME!!!

In general you want to do a repair install and NOT use the repair console.

Detailed instructions for a repair install are here http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm He also describes how to create an XP disk with the service pack included easily.

If you can no longer do a repair install or find it too complicated, DO NOT reformat and reinstall as this will wipe you out and leave you with nothing but the operating system. You would have to reinstall all your programs and much of your data would be inaccessible.

Reimage can repair your system even if a repair install fails. It costs a little but it is well worth it to save your data. It takes about 30 minutes and preserves your programs and data. If you are not happy with the results, you don't have to pay and you can reverse any changes that it made. You Windows xp cd is now scratched.

It is not possible to read files from the disk (although some files are also not copied onto your hard drive)

So you need to use a new Windows xp CD.

I am 100% sure New CD will work.
