An external hard drive is for data storage, but is not contained in the computer case. It is connected to the computer by plugging into a port on the outside of the case. The advantage is that it is portable and can be unplugged and carried with you and plugged in another computer that can also store and retrive data from the drive.

An external hard drive stores data from your computer (like pictures, songs, documents, etc.) and instead of it being a permanent device in your computer, you can unplug it (typically USB, but 10/100 is also available).

the funtion is the same as the internal one, but the thing is that it's difficult to take the internal from one place to another but the external can be easily caried, it's good for large data transfer, and at the same time makes more chances of developing bad sectors if not caried properly.
