I am looking to buy a tv tuner card that can play the digital satalite chanels on my laptop. As i was searching online, i came accross Digital Satellite TV (DVB-S) ,Digital Terrestrial TV (DVB-T). what is the difference between the two? Can any of these be used for satalite channels which require a paid subcription. Do i have to connect the device directly to the dish or does it have to go to a reciever that has the smart card. Please help me out. If there are some really good devices please suggest. I would preffer a USB device that can be used for analog & FM too.

I Would Say No For One Reason Encrypted Channels And You Would Need Something Provided By Your Satellite Provider Like The Sat Box To Unscramble The Channels And There Not Gonna Just Pass That Info Out Would Allow For Free Sat TV. Thats Why All You See Is 125 Channel Cards Is Because Thats The MAX You Can Get With Standard Or OTA Cable. I May Be Wrong But I Doubt It. ~~~~~But You Could Just Connect A Sat Dish Either From A Satellite Box Or From A TV Output Connected To A Sat Box.

I just bought anew flat screen 40 inch hitachi 1080 led lcd tv, and now my computer is starting to get a no signal and my roku does too. I do not know if it is too many electronics in one bedroom or why theyr are doing this. When I had a regular box t.v everything was fine with the roku connected and the computer online. Now there are no signal issues.... Nick A

Connecting a PC to a TV

Q:My new plasma TV has a PC connection. Is it possible to network the television with my computers? I would like to use the TV for Web surfing. I would also like to use the computer to record television shows. It seems that should be possible. But I’m not sure how to do it.

A:You can certainly connect your computer and network to your television. In fact, there are several ways to do it.

The simplest way is to use the television as a computer monitor. You simply cable your video card to the appropriate television jack. To see the computer desktop, select the computer as the television input.

Provided that your computer is networked, you can access content on other computers. You would need a mouse and a keyboard to navigate on the computer. Your television remote will only control the television.

There are a couple of problems with this setup. Obviously, the computer would need to be in the same room. You might be okay with that. Some people don’t want a computer sitting beside their TV set.

Resolution could be a problem

Also, your video card's resolution might be too low for the television. This means the picture would be less than desirable. You could buy a new video card. If you do, I recommend a DVI or HDMI output. This will yield the best picture quality.

Your television may only have one HDMI input. You can buy a DVI-to-HDMI cable, if needed. If you need more HDMI inputs, you can buy an HDMI switch to accommodate them.

This will take care of video going from the computer to the television. It won’t allow you to use your computer as a DVR.

For that, you need a TV tuner card. You can buy ones that go into an empty PCI slot. Or, you can buy ones that attach via USB. Whatever you buy, it should have a digital (ATSC) tuner. Otherwise, it will be obsolete by 2009.

Signal enters through computer

The television signal will come in to your computer. Software will record your shows. The video will then go through the video card to your television. If your computer's TV tuner has a remote, it controls DVR functions. I have a column that explains how computers are used as DVRs.

There is another way to do this. You’d have to give up Web surfing, though. You could use a media hub (or extender) to connect your computer to your television. There are wired and wireless varieties. You won’t have full use of the computer. However, a media hub easily accesses videos, pictures and music.

You probably still will need a TV tuner card on your computer. I have not seen media hubs that include DVR capabilities. Some TiVos have features similar to media hubs, though. Of course, TiVo requires a subscription.

6. Tape It Off the Internet

Previously mentioned web site Tape It Off the Internet (TIOTI) is an online television aggregator of sorts, allowing you to search for a show you want to watch and then offering several different options for viewing it. For example, if you're looking for the latest episode of Heroes, TIOTI may provide you with one link to a streaming online video of the episode, another link to a torrent to download the episode, or an additional link to buy it in iTunes—among other helpful information like episode summaries. If you've got a preferred method of streaming or downloading your favorite shows (for example, you really like BitTorrent), TIOTI probably isn't the first place you want to go. But if you've had trouble finding a show using other methods, you might get lucky and find a link that'll take you to the episode you're looking for at TIOTI.

Web site Tape It Off the Internet (TIOTI) is an online television portal designed to help you find and watch your favorite TV shows, either through streaming online video, BitTorrent downloads, or links to purchase the episode or season from iTunes or Amazon. The goal of TIOTI is to make finding and watching your favorite television shows easier than your regular BitTorrent experience—sort of a "non-geek" BitTorrent tracker and then some. TIOTI takes some getting used to, but if you've never been happy with the BitTorrent experience (even after our beginner and intermediate guides), Tape It Off the Internet might be worth a try.
