Deciding between nVidia GTX1070 or 1080 graphics card?

I'm currently looking for a new gaming graphics card for my PC. I've been looking at nVidia GTX 1070 cards as they almost fit inside my budget, then noticed some cheap 1080 cards that are only slightly more expensive than the 1070, for example this one selling for £490: https://www.scan.co.uk/products/8gb...graphics-card-2560-core-1632-mhz-gpu-1771-mhz

It's a lot cheaper than other 1080 GPU's and there are many 1070 cards (lower spec cards) that are the same price or more. Am I not noticing something here? If this is a higher spec card, why would someone want to pay more for 1070 card of lower spec? This 1080 for £490 would still be a better deal than a similarly-priced or more expensive 1070 card, wouldn't it? Or is there any advantage that a similar/more priced 1070 card have over this 1080?

The issue right now is that cryptocurrency mining has HEAVILY inflated the price of low to mid range graphics cards. I'll spare you the details, but basically what is happening is that crypto-miners are buying up low to mid range graphics cards in HUGE numbers which is causing prices to inflate. It's getting a bit better, but it's not uncommon to see GTX 1070s prices higher than a GTX 1080. In fact, it's gotten so bad that manufacturers are starting to hike prices on the front end in order to discourage crypto-miners from buying their cards (i.e. Vega launch), and to keep their cards inside of the gaming ecosystem where they are more valuable.



That being said, if you can afford it, go with the GTX 1080 hands down. I currently run two 1080s in SLI but I have run benchmarks on a single card and it performs amazingly. At 1440p resolution it's an absolute beast. It's capable of well over 100FPS for most games at 1440p with settings maxed out. I should say that the GTX 1080 is NOT a card for running games at 1080p. It's simply overkill for that. If you are only going to be running games at 1080p 60FPS, then you really don't need anything more than a 6GB GTX 1060. If you are running at 1080p and above 100FPS or at 1440p at 60FPS then a GTX 1070 is your best bet. Finally, if you will be running games at 1440p above 60FPS, then the GTX 1080 is your best choice. The 1080 is capable of running games at 4K, but it's not going to hit a solid 60FPS for everything.

These GTX 1080 cards aren't cheap. The price of graphics cards is misconstrued because Cryptomining is popular. It's next to impossible to get an RX 580 card and the GTX 1070 cards have been significantly marked up.



The problem here is Ethereum Mining has drummed up the price of the GTX 1070, GTX 1060, RX 580, and RX 570. The reason is the GDDR5x memory used in the GTX 1080 has high latency so it doesn't mine coins as well as the GTX 1070 which uses GDDR5. Once this cryptocurrency thing finally crashes, the price of the GTX 1070 will also crash.



The GTX 1070 is ALMOST the best card for Ethereum mining. The hashrates are excellent and so is the power consumption. The only thing that holds miners back is the high price tag the GTX 1070 has.



If you're just gaming, getting the GTX 1080 is almost a no brainer. The GTX 1080 is 18% to 22% faster than the GTX 1080 in games.



So yeah, Crypto Mining and Ethereum are what you have missed in this equation This has been going on since late May..

1070 cards are used by bitminers hoping to get rich from bitcoin, et al. 1080s don't work near as well for that [different memory] so their price hasn't been bid up much.
