Some of these answers are wrong and others are not clear enough.
You need to first check with either the PC maker or motherboard manufacturer and see:
1. What is the total amount of memory supported by the board?
2. Does this memory have to be installed in pairs?
3. What type of memory am I currenty running so I don't break Double DDR by installing a single DIMM
Basically your usually better off with multiple chips rather than a single large chip. Your cost per MB is usually lower this way plus if the system is designed to use multiple channels you get added bandwidth by splitting the memory into seperate banks on seperate busses.
Crucial has a pretty good web site for finding out what memory your system can take but don't take that for gospel.

gizmo and vamsee are right - 1st u need available slots; 2nd your system's BIOS must be able to allow the use of that much ram. You'll need to check your hardware manual (hopefully you have one) as to where you can install the 1gb DIMM, too. For example, let's say you have 3 slots. Let's say the 2 existing DIMMs are situated such that when you look at them they are in the 2 back slots and the front slot is empty. You may think that all you have to do is pop in the 1gb DIMM in the empty slot. You have a 50/50 chance of being correct. If it is unrecognized after putting it in that slot then take it out - move the DIMM that is in the farthest back slot to the front and then plug in the new DIMM and try that. Anyway, you should be able to find some guide or manual about your pc that explains which slot on the motherboard the DIMMs should be installed in. As long as you don't create any static electricity then you will be safe swapping in and out at will until all the memory is recognized by your system. Rest assured, you can mix DIMMs. Most systems' manuals have a chart on how it can be done.

RAM dimms need to be added in matched pairs. If you have two slots left you can either add two 1 gb dimms or 2 512 KB dimms. The more Ram the better.

That can be possible depending on how much RAM ur motherboard can take. If ur motherboard can support more than 2 GB, then go ahead!

That depends on if you have enough ram slots on your motherboard. I know that you can buy the amount of ram you want in two sticks but it may be expensive.
