What should I look for in an external dvd burner? What about software?

I want to start burning dvds using a regular desktop computer. How hard is it to hook up an exteranl dvd burner? What should I look for in a burner (features, price, etc)? What should I look for in software? Is there anywhere to get free software that works good? Any advice would be appreciated as I am not very computer savvy and want to do this as cheap as possible but still get good quality dvds.

most DVD burners are the same. if you wanna go all out get a dual layered one. most burners also come with software but if your into doing a lot with editing you might want to go out and buy other software since the free ones are usually basic. Nero seems to be a good program. i have the regualr version and theres not much freedom with menus and such. you can get a better version though that probably lets you create more

I don't know why you are referring to an external dvd burner. You can easily attach two cd/dvd rws to a average pc. If that is what you mean by external. Connecting a dvd writer directly to your motherboard gives better results than a external one. And it will be less expensive than the external one.

Anyway along with the purchase of a standard cd/dvd RW , you are entitled to get a dvd/cd containing cd/dvd writing software and also dvd playing software(which is missing in windows media player) So don't miss the accompanying software that comes free with the purchase of a new cd/dvd RW.
