The sound might be muted. Do you hear any sounds at all in the headphones? To check, double click the speaker icon in the system tray (lower right corner of the desktop). Look for the check boxes labeled MUTE, and uncheck them if they are checked. Also look to see if any volumes are turned all the way down.

Or, if you have a sound card (not using integrated sound on the motherboard), you might not be able to hear music from the CD player if there's not a cable from the CD player to a sound input connector on the motherboard.

If it is a work computer, oftentimes the company doesn't install the drivers for the soundcard. To check to see if the soundcard drivers are installed go to "control panel->system" and click on the "hardware" tab. Inside you will see a button that says "device manager." Click the button and a tree menu will appear. You are looking for any red or yellow on the tree. More specifically, look under the sound section of the tree. If you don't see anything out of place the drivers are installed. However, you may need to check other settings to hear sound. If it is not installed then you need to go to dell's website and download the drivers through the support webpage. Good luck!

go to your control panel, then click on the Sounds & Audio Devices icon. Go to sounds, then play the items on Program events that have woofer icons on the left side. If it allows you to play, but there is no sound, you're speaker settings may be muted. or go back to the control panel, then select SYSTEM. check if you're sound card's driver is installed.
