I dropped my external seagate 500gb hard drive the other day just after i turned it off and i think it was still spinning. it fell a few feet onto the concrete. It was in a case but now it does not work and sounds like it is spinning extra fast or something it is vibrating as if it is spinning fast and it does some clicking when trying to access it. at first it would not come up at all but after several hrs on google and trying several programs and tricks to get it to work I got it to come up when i first plug it in. autoplay comes up and it starts searching through the files. I goto my computer and i open it and can see my first set of folders and then it loses it. is there any way to salvage my data without having to send it for data recovery? this really sucks because i had about 400 gigs of movies, all my music, tv, pictures and applications.

First of all, hi friend!

Try recuva, link to download:

http://www.recuva.com/

I recommend install it!, cancel the wizard and look for option, after that look for actions tab. check DeepScan (If the normal scan doesn't found any files), and check Scan for non-deleted file and press OK button.

Connect your external drive and select that drive, after that scan.

It can take several hours, if the file is excellent then you can recover them doing right click on files that you want to recover.

Good luck.

I hope helped you.

Best wishes

Carlos.

Put the drive in a freezer overnight. Next day, try and back up the drive. Temperature variations can change tolerances and you may get lucky. The read head runs on a magnetic coil and it's alignment is critical. Your drop has caused it to get out of tolerance. The head may have also contacted the surface, which will certainly do data damage, but not to all of it. The clicking you hear is the head pulling out of the read area and banging against the stop, attempting to shake off any debris and then re-trying the operation. Barring that, no regular computer shop can help you. If you have data you absolutely need to get off the drive, then send it to a data clean-room hard disk repair shop. They will disassemble the drive and move the platter to a standards reader that will get your data, but it will cost you about $500 on the average.

if it didn't stop spinning completely then you probly broke it. i would try some hard drive recovery stuff... or try some backup tool, if that doesn't work..... try find some place that might fix it. if all fails then just get a new one. sorry, not much help :(
