My front two USB ports on my computer does not work anymore but the back ones do. So if I buy a USB hub that allows me to connect multiple usb ports through a USB hub would it work on my back ports? Would that USB hub let me connect my phone and ipod etc as my front ports are broken, and ive tried to connect my phone and ipod directly to the back USB ports but it wont connect, so will a USB hub help me??
An example would be: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hama-USB-2-0-Hub-bus-powered/dp/B0017X0R20/ref=acc_glance_computers_ai_ps_t_4
http://www.amazon.co.uk/TRIXES-MULTI-EXPANSION-SPLITTER-BLACK/dp/B00504DD4Q/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1316864397&sr=1-2
Thanks!

Yes. Usb ports support up to 128 devices each.

Most USB hubs have 4 ports though there are ones with more out there (these tend to be expensive).

You can add another hub to that hub giving even more ports.

If you're running several devices I recommend a powered hub (one that has it's own power supply) as each device draws some power from the hub.

You can also get a USB extension cable.

This will enable you to have the hub at the front rather than the back of your computer.

Done this myself.

Hope this helps.

I assume you have windows ME or later. If the item plugged into the USB port takes power from the pc you cannot use the extension cord. Most usb powered items only alow a cord length that is sent with the item. You can get a USB self powered HUB(comes with a power supply of its own) and then use an extension cord. Also you can click START, CONTROL PANEL, SYSTEM, HARDWARE, SYSTEM DEVICES, then right click USB, PROPERTIES, and then POWER to see if it is useing more than the 100 ma allotted to the USB port. Most all non powered extension cords are limited to 21" or less.

yes it will work if your back usb port is working fine , you could test the port by connecting any device that support the usb port . Since you have tried the port with you ipod try it the port with a different device like a USB pen drive if the device works fine then you should consider checking your cable of iphone/Ipod that you are connecting to the usb port (hope it also works fine :) ) if your usb port at the back of the computer works fine then you should consider buying a USB splitter there are different types of USB splitter available in the market from 2 port up to 16 port splitter and also comes with different price tag. So if you are having more that 2 device to connect to the usb port you should consider to buy at least a USB splitter that support 4 device at a time . Hope this will help .

If the ports are working normally then a USB hub should also work, but you have just told us that when you put your phone/ipod on the back ports then they can't connect so you must also have a problem with the back ports. Unless you can correct this problem first, I would advise against buying an extension hub

It can work... if your usb ports are v2.0+ and the hub also is compatible with the ports . A v1.1 usb port will be unable to handle an hub by my experience. And maybe your ports are also v1.1 and hence trouble in connecting ipod and phone.

Yes you can. You can also install a set of usb ports in a spare bay at the back of the pc if you wish to keep things tidy. See link.
