What graphics tablet to buy?

I graduated in Fine Art last year and specialised in drawing. Lately I've started to use acetate and tracing paper to 'layer' my drawings, as you would in Photoshop, to be able to make multiple changes to an initially-labor intensive drawing.

It looks like my work is becoming more and more like an illustrators' sort of work than a 'fine artist' so I'm thinking I should learn Photoshop and Ilustrator and start to learn to use a graphics tablet. (I have NO experience in Photoshop/Illustrator but can get hold of them cheaply.) There's a few reasons why I don't want to be an 'artist', e.g. I get psychosis.

Except, I agree that 'the medium is the message' and often these graphics tablets require pens when I prefer to draw in pencil. The way I use a biro, technical pen or pencil is entirely different to each other, so a graphics tablet, which requires a graphics-tablet-pen, probably isn't the best nor only solution.

Anyway, I believe I need a graphics tablet, which one should I get?

Wacom Cintiq would be great but its the most expensive pen tablet class. Since you haven't used a pen tablet before I think better start with entry level pen tablet. Wacom Bamboo fun would an very good choice. It's cheap (comparing with Cintiq) but very good for all the work unless you need a portable display screen.
