Question:
New computer HD 6970 unable to rate system or play games?
2012-01-21 16:42:22 UTC
Hello fellow nerds of the internet. I built myself a nice new computer yesterday, I7 3.44ghz, windows 7 64 bit, 16gb ram etc but the video card is the ASUS AMD 6970 knock off aka HD 6970 Direct CU2. I have had absolutely no problems watching videos or any of the normal day to day running of the machine and am able to use the higher resolutions for my monitor, except the moment I attempt to play a game, the game crashes anti climatically revealing my desktop. Whilst I am grateful for the lack of full system crashes, I built my gaming computer for get this GAMING, so I am a tad bit annoyed. I also attempted to do a windows machine rating; however that failed coming up with an error report…
The windows experience index for your computer could not be computed
Could not measure video playback performance
When I attempted to launch Star Wars The Old Republic I received the error report…
Error code: 7 incompatible system. Please verify your system is compatible with this game.
When I attempted to launch Crysis I received the error report…
Unsupported Video Card “ASUS EAH6970 Series” [vender = 0x 0x1002, device= 0x6718]
Continuing to run may lead to unexpected results of crashes.

I have already reinstalled the graphics card drivers and updated Direct X11. I am running the latest version of windows 7 service pack one. I have suspected that this may be a DX issue, however I would prefer to know what other people think before playing around with the registry. If at all possible I would like to avoid a full system wipe.

Windows Vista sucks, to be honest. I had to switch operating systems because I couldn't do any school work with it. I don't recommend just going out and trying to put on XP by yourself. The first thing I would do is call Microsoft and ask them if they can help you find the problem with Vista and the games. Sometimes it might be something really easy to fix, like a fire wall or something. But make sure when you call to see if they are not charging you for the call, because they do that sometimes. If you really hate vista though, you should contact the geek squad or something at best buy and see if they could put in a new hard drive for you with XP. That's what I did. But make sure they have all the drivers you need!!

ok ... you reinstalled the graphic drivers. may i assume you looked on the Asus and AMD/ATI websites for HD 6970 drivers with a newer date than the ones you were given?

Can tell you that DX11 isn't the problem. I have DX11 with my HD 6870 card and it works fine. I also have the exact same mobo and it's working fine. [I have Win 7 Pro, so I can't say about the Home version; and it seems awful unlikely to me.]

Suggest you send a 'help' scream to Asus -- the card works, but not with those games. I'd think the drivers would be backward compatible with the ones the games are expecting. [i'd also ignore the Crysis message, or check the Crysis boards for what to do ... seems your card is newer than their game.]

Just a guess but either update your drivers or save up for a new card (nVidia)
