Question:
EasyCap doesn't show up properly in devices?

I bought an EasyCap at Goodwill, so obviously it didn't come with a disc. I tried it out and after some research downloaded Ulead VideoStudio (which typically comes with it). I have Windows 8, and it automatically found the drivers - or so I thought.

It shows up in my control panel devices as generic "USB Audio Interface" instead of "Syntek STK1160" and doesn't show up AT ALL in Ulead VideoStudio or any other video software I've tried. I don't know what to do at this point to even get it to show up properly. Yes, it's plugged in. Any ideas?

It's junk. EasyCap is a rip off of EZCap. They are "problematic" and Video Studio was never designed to work with it. http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=40286

Hopefully you didn't pay too much. I see these new for $20 from time to time.

Well first of, it may not be called Syntek STK1160 when you get it working. It might be called "OEM device" like mine. I wanted that to get cleared up before I started :).

Tips for drivers:

When I upgraded to windows 8, the drivers I had previously for windows 7 still worked, so you probably don't need to worry about that.

Also, as there are many fake easycaps out there, not all drivers will work. what i did (when i had windows 7...might still work) is i went into the device manager section. to get this, go to the bottom left corner, right click on start and its in that menu. then find you easycap. If it does not have drivers, there will be a section called other with a small yellow caution sign next to it. otherwise, it has drivers.

Now you might have the wrong drivers. if you do, then your easycap will not be in others or its own section (sorry forget the name). delete the drivers by right clicking and there should be an option to do it. now, assuming you found drivers on the internet and there are on your pc, click update or find drivers, and it should work. If it doesn't, you either

A) have the wrong drivers or

B) have a fake easycap that doesn't work. most fakes do, but some don't

I'm having similar trouble with the Easycap I received just yesterday. Worked well when I did a test video, then a couple of more videos for a little Youtube project. But this evening, when I plugged it in and went to record again, the software (Honestech VHS to DVD SE) said that the "device cannot be used. Select another." I went and update the drivers, uninstalled the software and reinstalled it, and still have that same message: "Device cannot be used. Select another."

Hi Chazz: Not to be snide, but where you first went wrong was going with anything labeled "Easycap"... most of them are counterfeit fakes. The genuine articles (still not-so-great) now use the brand EzCAP. Second, I can see from your other Y!A Questions that you are in the UK using a Windows-based computer, so the whole PAL-TV (UK) versus NTSC-TV (USA/Japan) settings comes into play. Most of the Easycap-style complaints from the UK are no-video or no-color. (The "no sound" issues stem from the sound-chip driver that doesn't get properly installed in the cheap knock-offs.) Your VHS player is most-likely PAL format, so you need to set your Easycap driver (go into Windows "Control Panel" and look for "Scanners and Cameras" & your device should show up there as a USB Capture Device) for PAL video. Most USB capture gadgets default to NTSC. The capture software that came with the device (ULead Video Studio, DVD creation software, etc.) will also have to be set to PAL instead of NTSC. Since you are using "VHS tapes", I will caution you that studio-recorded movies have copy-protection signal schemes that will thwart most copy attempts. As long as you are talking about home-movies or shows you recorded off-air with the same VHS deck, you should be fine. As a troubleshooting measure, if you have another video gadget with either composite (yellow RCA) or S-Video output (not SCART) like a cable box, try using that as a video signal source for testing your capture gadget. Sometimes dirty heads on a VHS can make the video signal hard to copy. hope this helps, --Dennis C.

The problem appears to be with the USB coupling cable. I discovered this accidentally after it showed up as USB TV Device, and every time I touched the connector, the EasyCAP thingy keeps causing beeps in Windows and intermittent exclamation marks in the Device Manager. So I thought to try to connect it directly to the computer's USB port. Voila! it works. So I proceeded to use electrical tape to tightly wrap the EasyCAP to the coupling cable, and it works well every since.

Hope this helps.

looks like they are now called EzCap

so the real drivers may be here at www.ezcap.tv

you may need WinRar to complete the unzipping of the archive file

this is also a useful site http://easycap.co.uk/

you could try and get some kind of screen recorder, i think they are possible, or if you have a camera and tripod just set that up to film your tv screen
