i have an hp pavilion dv9700 but it only has a 100gb hard drive so i was wondering where i could get a cheap external hard drive that's compatible with this laptop. The external hard drive doesn't need to be massive, just 100-200gb unless anyone knows where i can get a really good deal on a bigger one. 10 points for best answers! Thanks.

There are plenty of places to get an external hard drive. Any electronics store (best buy, fry's electronics, microcenter) or electronics website (tigerdirect.com, newegg.com) will definitely have them. You can get a 1 terabyte drive for under $100 easily. For a smaller drive, like the sizes you mentioned, the price per gigabyte is higher than for a larger drive, so you actually get a better deal if you go for a larger capacity drive.

Any external drive out there will probably have a USB port, meaning that all you'll need to do is plug in the external drive to an open port on your computer, and it will be able to run out of the box without issues.

To summarize: a good external hard drive will cost less than $100. you can get them anywhere that computers are sold. The price per gigabyte gets lower as you get larger drives. Make sure that the drive has a USB connection and that your computer has an open port for it.

most of EXTERNAL hard drives are connected using USB2 connection (+ electricity for bigger ones, 3.5 inch).

they would all be fine.

if you want a cheap one - look for the bigger 3.5 inch ones and not the small 2.5 inch

(the 2.5 are smaller, lighter, compact = more expansive).

also, look for 320 GB or 500 GB- that should be enough.

p.s - I have a 3.5 Seagate 500 GB - I put movies inside - and it's still not half full.

good brand names : Seagate, Western Digital, and I'll give Hitachi a try too if I were you.

This website has amazing prices on hard drives. I bought mine from here (Western Digital, with my HP G60 series) and it works great. I bought a 1Tb for about 120 but they have other sizes for cheap. Check out the site below

Its a lot of a muchness. The 500GB force is rather quicker whilst moving records to and from the tough force, however rather than that, cross with what you'll be able to find the money for. Iomega are a company which skills in Storage, so possibly have the threshold.

Walmart has the cheapest ones I've seen. As of this posting this is the best time to buy since it's back-to-school time.
