I have a compaq computer with windows xp and i just got a printer thats connected via USB...?

The problem is my computer isnt detecting anything is plugged in to the USB port, so I cant connect my printer. Can someone please help me?

The printer should have a drver & some other programs on a disk that comes with it. Install the driver before you plug the cord that gos from the printer to the USB port on your PC. Make sure the power cord on the printer is pluged in. Then turn both the PC & printer off then on again. Your PC should detect the printer on the restart & load the driver by itself. If still haveing problems try a differant USB port.

They sell a USB to parallel port cable strictly to connect newer PCs via USB ports to an older printers that worked perfectly fine.

If you already own one or a similar cable, then you must go to the Control Panel then System then click on Hardware Devices then USB ports and look for USB Printing Support insuring there is a check mark in front of the box called USB 001 Virtual Printer Port for USB...
