Question:
Keyboard and Mouse not working?

Ok... here is the scenario:

I have McAfee running on my system.
I am running XP.

I was checking out videos on YouTube and a couple of other sites. Normal stuff for my grand daughter nothing risque. I then went to a site someone told me about where you can watch TV programs on your computer.

Then McAfee pops up a message saying it found and deleted a trojan (can't remember the name). Then a program pops up and says your PC is infected with a virus and you need to download a virus protection program (again can't remember the name). It then proceeds to do something that looks like it is downloading a program. Of course I try to exit out of it, but it doesn't work (big suprise).

At this point my pc shuts down. When it reboots it begins again. So what to try. How about restore to previous date? Well at first it won't even let me do that and then when I finally do, it doesn't change anything.

OK...then lets try something else, boot into last known good config. Well, now my PC boots to my ASUS control panel, mouse and keyboard working, I choose go to OS and when it gets to the log in screen, No Keyboard or mouse working!

I tried install XP using repair, but when it starts setting up devices and needs video drivers, keyboard and mouse aren't working!

Now when it gets to restarting setup........ it just reboots.

BTW I installed a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse a couple of days ago. I also have another wireless mouse that doesn't work either.

So any suggestions as to what I can do would be appreciated! HELP!!!!

Sadly, this is quite normal when you use Windows.

I have a solution which can cure you forever. At the end, you can have two operating systems and choose which to use for different jobs.

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu - download a copy of Ubuntu there (just normal 32-bit) and get it burned onto a CD.

Next, you can boot your computer with the CD. You'll boot to a desktop, and if internet and everything works, you're on a winner.

Next, browse your hard disk and copy anything you need - if you can't store it on another disk, you can write it onto DVD's.

You especially need to find the folder in Windows/System32/Drivers - these will need to be installed after you install XP unless you have all your original drivers disks....

Installing XP properly will take you up to 5 or 6 hours. After that, installing Ubuntu takes 20 minutes (yes, funny isn't it? both the same size, just one CD) and believe me, if you can read English a little bit, then installing Ubuntu is much much easier,

If you can't do that, then start up the partition editor - you can press ALT and F2 and type 'gparted', or you can find it in the menu - System>Administration>Partition Editor

You can delete the partitions, and make three new ones - about one third of the total disk space each. For me, I made Windows XP a 50GB partition, and the rest for Ubuntu.

Now install XP to the first partition. Make the second partition D: for storing documents (if XP fails again, documents will be safe).

When XP is installed, you can then install Ubuntu on the other partition. Now if anything goes wrong, you can simply choose the other one when you boot.

You should use Ubuntu for anything related to internet, and you can use it for a whole lot more. For some things (for maybe the first year) you can always use XP - but trust me, it won't last long.
