If I get a portable usb drive do you have to downlaod the files to the computer first or can you download things directly to the usb drive. Any other option of whether it is a good buy or not would be helpful also. I am new to a lot of this, I just got a MP3 player, and my son has a PSP, I was thinking it might make it easier with the portable usb. Let me know.

You can download to your usb, but I would suggest still downloading to your PC. There is all ways a chance that the file could become corrupted if your usb drive is pulled during a file transfer. You may never have a problem, but transferring from your PC to a usb should be fast, but depending on your download speeds it may take a while to get that file you want off the Internet. The less time it takes to get it onto your usb drive the better, and you'll reduce the chance of a failed download.

you can drop any file type onto it but check the file system first if it's FAT32 then you have a 4GB maximum file size limitation Ω to get Youtube videos you need the "Youtube downloader" and you can drop them directly onto the drive or onto your C:\ drive and them copy or move them to the External drive the better backup programs are the "Enterprise Versions" rather than the "Consumer Versions" the Enterprise Versions generally have a lot more features and capabilities for only a few bucks more in cost ie Norton Ghost is the consumer product Symantec Ghost Solution Suite is the enterprise product newer versions of Norton Ghost can't restore a system drive completely from scratch, you have to do a bare re-install of the OS first and then restore your files folders programs and settings etc. have a look at Acronis True Image or the other Symantec Enterprise backup product is called BESR (Backup Exec System Recovery) which can restore a complete system including all OS Programs & Data Files included in the backup. there are several options available but the best options are the ones which have a boot CD and can completely recover a system from a dead or failed HDD which "windows system restore" cannot do for you if your HDD fails you need a complete system backup image whether it's taken as a "hot backup" from within your windows login or a "cold backup" of an un-booted windows I repeat windows system restore cannot recover a failed hard disk nor can it save you from an infection of virus or any malware , in fact windows system restore can cause repeated infections from the virus / malware copies within the system restore points. * notes Consumer Version = Retail home user programs Enterprise Version = Retail business user programs

Yes you can.

Go to My Computer and find the drive letter that corresponds with your external USB drive. Remember what drive letter that is.

Then, when you download something and it asks you where you want to save the file, find the drive letter of your USB drive and save it there.

yes i download to my psp all the time. you just have to set the download destination in your web browser settings so it points to somewhere in the portable drive. technically it copies the download to the computer before it copies it to the portable disk.
