I use the floppy to upload pics from floppies to my computer. I want a decent transfer rate but I'm pretty unclear on wear to even start.

I'm not sure why you are using floppies but it would cost you less to implement the usage of a jump/thumb/flash drive than to locate, purchase, and install an external floppy drive.

They're all the same. Seriously. Ok, I think there's different speed models available now. 2x speed is standard, but a few companies make 4x units. If there's no price difference, go for it, but honestly, double-speed floppy drives are plenty fast and just buy whatever you find.

Also, think about USB keys. A 2GB one will cost you less than the $25 a USB floppy drive costs.

Before you buy one, check your local library. Many libraries still have one or two computers equipped with floppy drives. You can then burn the pics to a disk to take home to your computer.
