A firewire port is a port (cable) which carries high speed data between two devices. This type of port is primarily used to carry digital video data between a digital camcorder and a computer but can be adapted for any kind of data that needs to be transferred at very high speed. Firewire is also known as IEEE1394 by the institute of electrical engineers.

What he said but to add the Firewire term is basically owned by Apple, the actual IEEE port is 1394 and Sony calls it iLink.
