I'm looking at the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460, but have never purchased a video card before. A friend told me I wold have to be careful when looking for a video card because it may not be "compatible" with my motherboard. I understand I cannot just buy any graphics card and plug it into my computer. Not sure what specs I need to provide, but heres what I got from dxdiag:

Sweet System you have Congrats on it...

Now back to the Topic...

As your PC is normal enough to support all the graphic card available in the Market...

Make sure you have a Branded SMPS ( PSU ) like cooler master, Tagan, OCZ, etc etc which you can find in the market....

As you need 2-6pin Pcie power connector to power the card you need a pure 500w smps from any of those brands as i have mentioned above, so that your whole system will run stable while gaming...

Make sure you get the 1gb version the of the GTX 460 and EVGA make, cos they are the best..

768mb version of the GTX 460 is a bit slower, so tat you can spend a couple of thousand and get the 1gb version of it, so that it will be a future proof too..

And also add some 120mm fans in the cabby for good airflow, so that it make the GPU get nice air from outside the cabinet...

Have fun and Happy Gaming...

By looking at your specs it is a fairly new pc. Almost all desktops built in the last 4 years use a pci-express video card. Check the price at Newegg.com before you buy as they are the best store. The ASUS gtx460 is $55 cheaper than most of them and is a good brand. That is a very good video card for gaming as it is powerful. All the 460's are basically the same card but the price does vary by manufacturer.

Looking at the Dell Studio 540 documentation, it appears your motherboard does have a PCI Express x16 Port, which is what the GeForce GTX 460 uses to connect to your computer. It should work fine, and if you need any assistance installing the card this video can help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7dBELhb7n0

Also, as he says in the video, make sure your power supply has PCI-Express power cables. In your case, you'll actually need two six pin PCI-Express power cables to power your video card. You will have to open your computer to check. The cables are easy to identify, they will be among the large mess of cables coming out of your power supply and have six pins arranged in a 3x2 grid. If you cannot find any, you will need a new power supply. I would recommend the Corsair CMPSU-650TX 650W. Here's a link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139005
