How do set the Realtek HD audio manager to play digital sound through a optical cable ?

I just bought a optical cable today and connected one end to the pc and other to the z-680 speakers control amp . Now when i change the input status on my amp to direct i get analouge sound but when i change input to optical i don't hear any sound .
Am i meant to do something on the realtek audio manger control pannel ?
Someone plz help =/ ...

It should be under your Realtek HD audio manager under digital output, make sure thats set as your default output, not your 3.5mm jacks.

The only surround sound that a TV will output via optical cable is stuff it gets through the antenna. In other words, you can't plug your cable box, PS3, etc. into the TV with HDMI cables and expect to pass the surround sound audio out from the TV. In order to get surround sound from such external devices you must send the audio directly from those devices to your surround sound system.

Go to Control Panel



Double click Click Realtek HD



Click Audio/IO Tab



Choose 5.1 Surround.



Or ...

Go to control panel



double click sounds and audio devices



click 'Audio' tab



click the advanced button beside audio output



choose "5.1 surround" from the drop down menu



click 'apply'



click the "Voice" tab.



click the advanced button,



choose "5.1 surround." from the drop down menu



click okay.
