Another word, what must be taken into consideration when buying an internal hard disk?

I bought an internal hard disk 320gb SATA before but it couldn't work on my PC because it was not compatible with my motherboard so I sold it to one of my friends. I bought a new motherboard last year May and there is a PC fair in my hometown soon. I am going to buy a 500gb internal hard disk this time but what should I consider before buying internal hard disk?

Anyway, I have installed Lavalys Everest and my motherboard is ASUS P5KPL-AM.

All modern motherboards now do not have a Hard Drive capacity limit..or it is now insanely high. If you bought a motherboard in May -pretty modern- then you should be fine with even a 3TB+ drive.

Your motherboard has SATA and IDE ports, so you can use both. But the best is to use the much newer and faster SATA interface. From you saying you got your board in May, it is most likely the now common SATA 3Gb/s and not the recently introduced SATA 6Gb/s.

Odd that a motherboard with SATA has a drive limit of under 320GB...one of my older computers that is...10+ years old can support more than 320GB via IDE only.

Ah! What operating system were you using before? Operating systems can limit the drive capacity. Windows XP SP2 or 3 has a 2TB limit..and SP1 or lower had a limit of ~137GB...

Were your running Windows XP SP1, Windows 98 or something like that?

That mobo has SATA ports so get a SATA hard drive

There should be no compatibility issues with that board in this case. However it is a good idea to ensure your motherboard's bios firmware and drivers are up to date before you start installing new hardware.

See what connections your mobo has (sata or IDE) some sata mobos will accept a IDE hard drive but not vise-versa, you can however buy sata-to-IDE adapters fairly cheap.

you have 4 SATA ports, and a million IDE (helps 2 drives)...Theoretically you ought to put in 4 (SATA), 2T drives! then you definately in addition to might have an IDE port for 2 drives...assuming you like one for the CD/DVD force that leaves one for yet another no longer elementary force! So reckoning on what your CD/DVD is you ought to place the 2T, 250GB, 500GB, and 160GB on an analogous device and nevertheless have one port left over!
