The mouse i had been using for a few weeks recently stopped working. Up until this point the mouse worked properly but it recently stopped working. I have tried another wireless mouse and that doesn't work either. I think it is a problem with the laptop rather than the mouse but any help is appreciated.

go into control panel > device drivers> select pointers/mouse and check status to make sure its not in error.

Is this a bluetooth mouse or a USB mouse?

Bluetooth: Forget the device on your computer and then reconnect to it.

USB: Change batteries, re-sync mouse with USB adapter (most likely by holding both buttons on each piece simultaneously, or look for anything else in the vicinity of your mouse and laptop that could be causing interference.

Batteries could be dead, could be turned off on accident. Maybe your laptop disconnected mice on settings.

Check if the driver software is outdated.
