EDIT:
"...downloaded Fuse for OS X, but when I selected the NTSF-3G file to install..."
You got off track. See the exact details below about "Show Package Contents".
{{DETAILS:
--- What the two things do...
OSXFuse (or MacFuse in OS 10.6.8 or earlier) enables the underlying UNIX system of OS X to use alternate file systems.
NTFS-3G installs the alternate file system for NTFS that allows writing files to the format, not just reading files from it.
--- Why it must be jury-rigged...
MacFuse is an old enabler originally for Linux that works in Mac OS 10.6.8 or earlier. The MacFuse installer is NOT ABLE TO RUN in OS 10.7 or later, so you must use the "OSXFuse" enabler instead, and then open the "NTFS-3G.mpkg" (multi-package installer) to launch the NTFS-3G.pkg alone. The multi-package installer process always invokes MacFuse first, which will not work at all, so the whole process stalls. If you do things EXACTLY as I present below, it works. The developer of NTFS-3G no longer provides any input, so there is no separate installer that leaves out the defunct MacFuse package. We have to open the multi-package, ignore MacFuse, and launch the enclosed NTFS-3G installer alone.}}
Although it CAN work to install two NTFS enablers together (Tuxera and NTFS-3G), it is better to uninstall Tuxera (since it isn't working) and then install NTFS-3G by CAREFULLY following the steps below.
**********************************************************************************
Try uninstalling Tuxera and use NTFS-3G instead.
To uninstall Tuxera, remove these files.
/System/Library/Filesystems/ fusefs_txantfs.fs
/Library/PreferencePanes/ Tuxera NTFS.prefPane
/sbin/mount_fusefs_txantfs /sbin/newfs_fusefs_txantfs /Library/Receipts/ TuxeraNTFS.pkg
/var/db/receipts/ com.tuxera.pkg.Tuxera_NTFS
/Library/Preferences/ com.tuxera.NTFS.plist
Use the "Go" menu at top > Go to Folder to find the files, like this...
-- Type
/System/Library/Filesystems
anc click "Go". Trash fusefs_txantfs.fs
-- Type
/Library/PreferencePanes
and click "Go"
Trash Tuxera NTFS.prefPane
and continue like that. (Each time you go to the enclosing folder, and then locate the file to trash.)
To use NTFS drive volumes as read-write in OS 10.7 or later...
-- Download and install OSXFuse, link below. You must install this first.
-- Download NTFS-3G, link below.
-- Mount the NTFS-3G image, but DO NOT install--It has two packages inside, and will try to install the defunct MacFuse first, which would fail. Instead....
-- Right-click the "Install NTFS-3G.mpkg" file, and choose "Show Package Contents".
-- A new Finder window will open. Change the view option to list or columns.
-- Navigate to Contents > Packages.
-- Open "NTFS-3G.pkg" and install.
As for exchanging the drive, waste of time. The problem is software, not hardware.
