it varies from different kinds of viruses.

usually, trojans will manifest themselves and secure themselves in directories and system restore packets, and will sit and monitor activity.

more serious viruses will engage immediately via the usb's autorun, and will start whatever it's programmed to do right away. more hardcore viruses aren't very quiet, and typically do damage from the start.

worms will also manifest themselves in recovery places, and basically feed off of the computer's resources in the process-- gradually multiplying and backing themselves up everywhere throughout your system.

all in all, again, it depends on what the virus in question is programmed to do.

If you're just storing data on the Flash drive, then you have nothing to worry about. If there's a virus in the computer and you have .exe files on your Flash drive, then it is possible that the .exe files could be modified, though extremely remote. It depends on what the virus was programmed to do. I don't think that you should worry about it anyway, because viruses usually only target certain files. If it were otherwise, then a virus would infect every single .exe on the computer. Of course, this is never the case. Some trojans are designed to destroy data, but almost all of the time, the trojans are designed for spying or something like that. Indiscriminant data destruction isn't profitable.

Like everybody says, it depends on the type of virus and if you have autoplay on or not. What I just recently did to protect myself from getting accidentally infected is install this program called Panda USB vaccine. It stops all usb's from automatically starting (which is how viruses get on the computer) and I think it will prevent the USB from automatically starting as well.

Check out the site where they explain it

and then if you have computer issues, this may help you out as well
