Ok, I had a Compaq computer that had a dvd/cd rom, but I got a virus. So I had to buy a new tower, but this computer doesn't have a dvd drive. It just has the cd rom and an extra slot for something else. So I was wondering if I could take the dvd/cd rom out of the old computer and put it in the new one? Is there any way I could do that? If I can, could you please tell me how to do it? But if you don't know, that's cool too. Thanks for reading. :)

Yes absolutely you can...

As long as both are desktop computers...

On each PC you need to unscrew one of the walls that should slide off...

Once you are inside both machines and can see, you need to unplug the DVD drive both power and parrallel cable, and plug it back into the same connection on the other NEWER PC...

If there are no free slots, try and take your drive out of the NEW PC and replace it with the DVD drive...

2 things to know...

Make sure you have no static on you when you do this, just touch your hand to the outside of the case before working on the inside...

And if you have any issue, just replace it back like it was, it would not be expensive to have someone hook it in for you, it takes less than 5 minutes to do...

The answers are correct up to a point. It is important to look at the back of the 2 drives. The one in your computer probably has the jumper set to master. Jumpers are little black slip on connectors, and the master/slave/cable select settings are written near the connectors. Set your drive you are adding to slave if the one already there is set to master. If the one already there is set to cable select, set the one you are adding to cable select. These are simply settings to allow the bios to find both drives. Once you have done this and boot the computer, windows will install the driver for you. The message will be: found new hardware/searching for driver/your new hardware is installed and ready to use. One further note: If the old drive will not push out when you remove the 2 screws on one side, manufacturers have a nasty habit of putting two more in the back side requiring both sides to be removed. Keeping both drives is the way to go.

Yes, you can do it, but you have to be confident in being able to determine the correct cable connections and dvd drive settings.

Unless you have some experience, I would suggest you get someone who has this knowledge to do it for you, or you can run the risk of causing other problems.

The way to do it is to remove it from the old PC, and place in the new tower in exactly the same position, but be careful of the data cable, make sure they are connected to the correct ide port.

Ye syou can. The extra space is a slot so you can add anotheer drive. Just put the old DVD drive and install the software so it is usable. Just because you got a virus on your old computer only means your software crapped out. Your hardware should be fine

it is just connecting the same cable you disconnect to remove the cd/dvd...but u also need the driver

a driver is a file on the computer that tells the computer what the device plugged in is.....without the driver then it wont regesture it as a cd/dvd......a driver can be found on the cd that came with the computer or on the web....just google the cd/dvd brand and good luck
