i have a dell dimension 4500 with windows xp home edition...after completing a service pack 2 upgrade my usb port no longer function. I tried to rollback--didn't work. I tried to unistall and restart pc--didn't work. I tried to reinstall with dell resource cd--still not working. is there any other way to fix my usb ports...in the device manager it plainly says DRIVERS ARE NOT INSTALLED?

Somebody please help me before i throw this hunk of junk out the window.

Doesn't sound like a software problem. Are you sure the USB port isn't working? Could it be the device that's plugged into the USB port which is malfunctioning?

I would troubleshoot as follows:

Go to Control Panel and into System settings and then to Hardware, and Device Manager. A window will pop up. Scroll to the bottom and hit the plus sign and you will see that the USB ports expand. If any have checkmarks or question marks, remove them by right clicking and choosing to remove them on the menu that pops up.

Once you remove them, reboot. It should re-install all the drivers for them. When done, reboot again and you should have working USB ports.

If this does not work, then reboot your computer. When it boots up again, immediately hit F2 or Delete, and it will pull up the BIOS settings. In there, scan around (do NOT CHANGE ANYTHING BUT THE PNP SETTINGS) to find the Plug and Play OS settings. Make 100% sure that's on a Plug and Play OS and that it's turned on.

If it does not work after that, then I suggest it's one of three other things:

1. Your USB port failed and it is an internal hardware issue.

2. Your USB supported item that you are plugging in is malfunctioning.

Good luck

3. The USB cord is malfunctioning.

All I can say, being that I worked with computers for some time is to do everything that everyone above has mentioned. dell's website; device manager and letting home take care of it for you; faulty usb port/device. All are possibilites and I'm sure one will work. Best of luck.

OK here we go . . .

Click on start then settings then control panel.

click on system

click on hardware tab up top of window.

click on button that says device manager

find "universal serial bus controllers"

click on + sign

right click on "generic usb hub" and select uninstall

you might need to do this for every device underneath of Universal Serial Bus controllers as well.

reboot and WinXP home will re-install the proper drivers.

Service pack 2 does this sometimes.

Have you tried getting drivers from the dell website? Sometimes you need to install the drivers for the motherboard which contain the USB drivers.
