The GTX 650 Ti Boost seems to be slightly better on average. But they're so close that which card yields higher fps depends upon the game title. Some games are optimized more for AMD cards, others are optimized more for Nvidia cards. So check performance in the titles you play most often.

If you can spend a little more for a GeForce GTX 660 or Radeon HD 7870, it would be worth it. The GTX 660 is down to $200 before rebate, and you can find the HD 7870 for about $215.

Note that results from HWCompare don't accurately reflect real-world performance. Their results are just theoretical estimates (i.e. educated guesses) based upon the manufacturer's published specs, not based upon any actual testing of the cards. In many cases they're never even physically seen the cards in question! Their theoretical performance (which is clearly stated in the disclaimer) should be taken with a grain of salt. Always look for actual in-game test results from sites like Anandtech, Techspot, Guru3D, Techpowerup, Bit-Tech, Tom's Hardware and Xbitlabs.

Here's the real difference between a Radeon HD 7850 and 7870:

It's an AMD Radeon HD 7850- they acquired ATI before the 7xxx series was launched.

Almost a toss-up, it depends what you're playing.

In general Nvidia cards series 6xx midrange cards have LOWER power consumption than AMD's version 7xxx cards. For example the GeForce GTX 660 draws less power than a Radeon HD 7870, the GeForce GTX 660 Ti draws less than a Radeon HD 7950. At the low-end (Radeon HD 7750 and below) AMD cards are more energy-efficient.

Nvidia cards also have the advantages of PhysX support and better drivers.

ATI Radeon HD 7850 will be slightly faster than NVIDIA GTX 650Ti. Also,ATI cards are known for its less power consumption. But here, power consumption is almost same for both cards.

Any way go for ATI Radeon HD 7850.

You can play almost all games at high settings but for some games, you need to lower settings at higher resolution.

How about beat them both for $200:

The 650ti is going for like $180, so for $20 more getting the HD 7870 should be a no brainer. The 7870 literally has DOUBLE the potential of the 650ti. You won't see double the performance in real world tests, but the 7870 out of the box will destroy the 650ti and just wait until it is over clocked.

Here is a quick comparison:

The 7870 could achieve about 20% better scores then even this comparison is showing.

C-Man is right. It's really close in most cases and the determining factor will be what the game is optimized for.

However for the most demanding titles, like Far Cry 3, Crysis 3, or the Metro games, running them at ultra detail at the industry standard 1080p is going to be a struggle.
