Using a cheap one for _backup_? Well, you decide, but this is something like buying the cheapest chinese car for your kid with a fresh driving licence...

Buy a WD External USB drive (either an Elements or a Passport if you want to carry it around).

IT depends on how cheap we are talking about here.

But I think for the individual like you to store all the important data in the external hard drive, you should invest in the good quality and reliable one. Try not to buy the refurbish electronic (I had bad experience myself in the past). Buy a brand new and get a brand like western digital.

I am looking for a good external hard drive too, I am looking at "WD 1TB Passport 3.0" the price is around $115 I think, I am waiting for the price to drop then I will get one.

Try to get a hard drive that is 3.0 instead of 2.0, because 3.0 will offer you faster transfering speed. And it makes a huge different.

IF you think 1tb is too much for you, you can always get a 500mb or 750mb, it all depends on how much your budget is.

But IMO, Western Digital definitely will be my top choice.

Good lucK!

You should learn a bit about the product and select one according to your preferences.

Minimum facts you should learn about the an external hard drive.

Connecton: (USB 2.0), USB 3.0, Firewire...

Capacity: 500GB, 750GB, (1TB), 2TB ...

Brand: Hitachi, (Seagate), Toshiba, Western Digital ...

Drive Size: 2.5 inch, (3.5 inch)

My recommendations in parenthesis, reasons:

Seagate (which bought Maxtor) is my opinionated brand of choice for dependability. USB 2.0 is pretty much a standard whereas USB 3.0 is newer (not supported by older systems and more expensive) and firewire isn't very popular. Capacity is up to you, but 500GB or 1TB are the ones typically on sale. 3.5 inch because you want a back-up solution and not a more portable (2.5") solution.

Based on my recommendations, one could be had for around $50. Look for DEALS and not just "sales".

Your definition of "cheap" may not be the same as everyone's else, but for me, I use Newegg.com. They generally have fair prices, and always have great customer service. Right now there are several external HDDs of 500GB for around 59 bucks, and you can get 1TB to 1.5TB in the 99 dollar range

Absolute maximum inexpensive way? purchase or locate an previous ata or sata computing device hard drive and purchase a 20$ enclosure at your community computing gadget ironmongery shop. My advice is purchase considered one of those kits that purely plugs into the interface of the hard drive with out an enclosure, and get an previous pc troublesome rigidity. they're often fairly troublesome. It won't look fairly nonetheless.
